Apple has unveiled a new iPad Air, less than a year after the previous model’s release.
The latest update introduces the M3 chip, replacing the M2 that powered last May’s version. While Apple didn’t specify how much faster the new model is compared to its predecessor, it claims the M3 chip makes it twice as fast as the M1-powered Air from 2022.
Aside from the chip upgrade, most features remain unchanged. The iPad Air is still available in two sizes—11-inch and 13-inch—and four color options. Pricing remains the same as the previous model: starting at $599 for the smaller version and $749 for the larger one.
Apple CEO Tim Cook hinted at the launch in a tweet on Monday, teasing “something in the air” this week. The phrase sparked speculation about both the new iPad Air and a potential MacBook Air release later in the week.
Alongside the new iPad Air, Apple introduced an updated Magic Keyboard and a refreshed base iPad.
“iPad Air is so popular because of its unmatched combination of powerful performance, portability, and support for advanced accessories, all at an affordable price,” said Bob Borchers, Apple’s vice president of worldwide product marketing. He added that the new M3-powered Air, combined with Apple Intelligence and the updated Magic Keyboard, enhances versatility and value for students, travelers, and content creators.
iPad Air vs. iPad Pro
Positioned between the entry-level iPad and the high-end iPad Pro, the iPad Air balances performance and affordability. The Pro model, in contrast, features Apple’s latest M4 chip, a premium display, and is the company’s thinnest product yet.
Apple also upgraded its most affordable iPad, equipping it with the A16 chip—first introduced in the iPhone 14 Pro—and doubling its base storage. Despite the improvements, its price remains unchanged at $329.
Both the new iPad Air and base iPad are available for pre-order now and will begin shipping on March 12.
